SORRY, NO NOMINATION FOR PIPER PERABO THIS YEAR: We don't have anything terribly profound to say about the Golden Globe nominations, other than that they continue the Globes' trend to fetishize the new (4 of the 5 best drama series and 3 of the 5 best comedy series nominations are for freshman shows of varying levels of merit), love on star names (2 acting nods for Ryan Gosling, an acting and a directing nod for George Clooney), and the utterly random (Callie Thorne? Johnny Galecki but not Jim Parsons?). Take it away, folks.

Haven't had time to fully analyze the list but upon first glance my biggest objection is no Breaking Bad for Best Drama and I'm happiest that Homeland wasn't snubbed here as they were by the SAG nominations.

ReplyDeleteI like the idea that Glenn Close could complete the EGOT (needing GO) for having written a song for this movie that no one has seen. (Also: no Muppet songs? No Muppet nomination for Musical/Comedy?)

I'm bummed that Muppets was left out. I think it deserved some, especially song for Man or Muppet. Tangent -- since we have so many Muppet fans here, you'll all be delighted to know that Jason Segel, Nick Stoller and James Bobin are genuinely the nicest guys and super fun and love this movie just as much as it seems.
ReplyDeleteThe brief Talk of the Town profile of Segel likewise made him come out as an Ubermensch--he's shopping at FAO Schwarz, and offers to buy Muppet Whatnots (about $100 each) for two kids he runs into who recognize him.
ReplyDeleteSometimes, they get it right when the Emmys don't, though, most notably giving Claire Danes a win for My So-Called Life in a year when the Emmy went to Kathy Baker (for Picket Fences), nominating Lauren Graham for Gilmore Girls and SMG for Buffy. Yes, they also go for the wacky and big star driven, but sometimes the fetish for the new helps.

ReplyDelete<span>Unlike the Emmys, I believe the Golden Globes gave a well-deserved acting award to Katey Sagal for Sons of Anarchy. The awards are so random and wacky that sometimes they're right, but there's and undercurrent of wackiness to them.</span>
ReplyDeleteWhen somebody says "Callie," I always have to think a little bit to figure out which one is Dayton Callie, which one is Sarah Wayne Callies, and which one is Callie Thorne. I'm all in on Charlie Utter, I felt mild but not overwhelming remorse when Dr. Sara was beheaded-but-later-just-kidding, and I realize that McNulty was awful to Elena but still don't know why she had to be so mean to him once she moved on.

ReplyDeleteOy. The Golden Globes are utter bullshit, and are only worth watching because the famous people get drunk, and then have to stagger up to the stage to try and say thanks in a tactful manner. They should only nominate people who will definitely drink the entire time.

ReplyDeleteNot entirely correct--Jim Rash (Dean Pelton) is a Golden Globe nominee for screenwriting "The Descendants." Community and other ensemble shows get hit really hard by the Golden Globes' consolidation of all supporting categories (drama/comedy/longform) into one, meaning the non-McHale-cast has to compete with everyone from Alan Cumming and Archie Panjabi to Adam Scott, Nick Offerman, and Rashida Jones.
