EGOT WATCH: While we debate whether Whoopi Goldberg's producing Tony for Millie and her pair of Daytime Emmys count, James Earl Jones will join EGOT next year, assuming the honorary Oscar he's getting counts. (Jones' other wins? Tonys for Great White Hope and Fences, three Emmys, most prominently for Gabriel's Fire, and a 1976 Grammy for Spoken Word, shared with Helen Hayes, Henry Fonda, and Orson Welles. Interestingly, that Grammy win for Hayes made her the first person to EGOT.)

  1. Wow. I did not realize that this made King Jaffe Joffer an EGOT.

    Also, Borpo got a Hersholt.

I thought this made him an EOT -- didn't know about the Grammy.

For my money, a Tony for anything is a Tony and an Emmy for anything is an Emmy.  So producing, daytime, whatever.  If you can polish it and put it on the shelf, it counts.

However:  a natural EGOT -- one where a person gets each component by doing the thing that one thinks of people doing to get that hardware -- is obviously more impressive.  If somebody were to get an acting/directing/writing EOT and a singing G, for example, that would be more impressive than the relatively fringey accomplishment of, say, a legitimate OT, a guest-actor E, and a spoken-word G.  Just my two cents.

What's up with the Oprah Winfrey honorary Oscar?  She's one of the most powerful forces in the history of television, a smart businesswoman, and a great philanthropist.  Apart from her nomination for Color Purple, what movie history does she have? Why does this make any sense at all?

Well, she produced Beloved, the merits of which are debatable.

  6. It doesn't, any more so than her Kennedy Center Honor.  She also did Beloved, some voiceover work and some producing.

  7. And competitive > honorary -- Jones joins Streisand and Minnelli for having one of the four being an honorary one. But most of the EGOT winners have their Grammy in a non-singing-or-composing category.  (Mike Nichols and Whoopi Goldberg have theirs in Comedy.)

I think she got it because she was in a frenzy and shouted "everybody here is going to GET AN HONORARY OOOOSCAAAR -- YOU AND YOU AND YOU AND YOU" and then in the middle of all the screaming and crying she slipped in "AND ME" and at that point it just would have been embarrassing not to give it to her.

Actually, I know that's wrong.  Oprah got her honorary Oscar because it is customary to award one to the commencement speaker at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences graduation ceremony.

  10. I just think Uma needs to present her with the award.
