WHAT'S WITH ALL THESE AWARDS? THEY'RE ALWAYS GIVING OUT AWARDS. BEST FASCIST DICTATOR -- ADOLF HITLER: Splitsider's Josh Kurp ranks the ten funniest films ever nominated for Best Picture.

It's not that great a list, because here's what's missingThe Graduate, TootsieButch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Broadcast News, Working Girl ("$6000? It's not even leather!"), The Great Dictator and especially M*A*S*H.

  1. Yeah, strange list. It seems to be "best films that have some funny moments" which is something quite different. Pulp Fiction is a great movie, but funniest? Goodfellas? Hmmm....

I have no issue with Annie Hall's place on this list. But Tootsie is really a perfect comedy.

Note, please, that my list is limited to what I regard as outright comedies. So sorry, Toy Story 3. And based purely on my personal taste, Tootsie does not make the list, not can I in good conscience put on my list anything with Melanie Griffiths. So, in no particular order:

Bonus: The best comedy never nominated for best picture is, of course, His Girl Friday (second place: Singin' In The Rain).

Babe, I struggled with as whether or not it is a comedy and came just down on yes. Some people might leave musicals off entirely, but that's not my style.

The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming was just great. I gotta put that back in the queue.

Seems like Russians' not remembered as well as it should be for some reason, doesn't it?

Singin' in the Rain is one of the best movies of any genre ever. Excellent list.

You're willing to put in The Music Man and Seven Brides as outright comedies, but not Toy Story 3? Arbitrary and capricious.

I make no apologies for that capriciousness, except that TS3 is much more serious than either of those two.

Good work on the list, JJF (though I would keep Strangelove from the linked list, and include Tootsie, probably at the expense of one of the musicals and 4W&aF), and total and complete co-sign re: Melanie Griffith. I wanted to add her to the retirement thread, but then I happily realized I haven't seen her in anything in years (nor has she been in anything of consequence in years. I'd maybe want to make room as well for The Awful Truth or American Graffiti.

Also should be on the funniest but not Best Picture nominated list: Some Like It Hot and The Court Jester. And although HGF wasn't, The Front Page (1930) was.

SLIH and Jester would definitely be in a top ten of best comedies not nominated, along with Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Airplane!, Fish Called Wanda and The Producers.

The Splitsider list seems to be operating as if a "drama" is defined as everyone dies in the end.

Wait, what was Goodfellas doing there again?
