Because they aren't as good as the five movies I listed.  Admittedly, they don't offer a look at Katherine Hepburn's netherregions but I just wanted to toss up the thread.  Both movies would make the Top 40.

So, is half the fun trying to guess which town without checking?  And for SF, I'd dump Look Who's Coming (I think it's horribly creaky), raise Vertigo to #1 and stick Zodiac on the list with an honorable mention for Milk.

    5) The Skulls (totally a guilty pleasure movie for me)

I've taken some liberties with location and included the whole state, because the only thing filmed in my town was an embarassing episode of "My Super Sweet Sixteen".

    Home Region -- non city

    1) The Basket (the only movie ever filmed in my hometown, the schoolhouse is on a friends farm)
    2) Stand By Me (not just filmed in Astoria but also very near my grandparents farm west of Eugene--elevated on the list due to it being a REALLY good movie)
    3) Toys  (those big green grasslands are the Palouse)

    Current City/Hometown of my Heart

    4) High Fidelity (a movie I both love and feels like the place I met Chicago in)
    5)  About Last Night

    Honorable Mention TV Show
The Beast with Patrick Swayze because my office's entrance was doctored a tiny bit to be the entrance to the strip club "Platinum Cats" that was in like one episode.

For more specifics on how much of Christmas Story was filmed outside Cleveland, here's an article:
    http://torontoist.com/2008/12/reel_toronto_a_christmas_story.php

Interiors, the Chinese food restaurant, the tree lot were all on the north side of the border.

  55. My hometown:

    1.  The Invention of Lying
    2.  Housesitter
    3.  The Women
    4.  Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

These are the best, and to my knowledge, the only movies ever to have scenes filmed there.  Anyone know where it is?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Adam C.2:39 PM

Friends of Eddie Coyle is terrific -- it's been many years since I've seen it, but Mitchum is great and the closing shot is quite memorable.

Agree with the Philadelphia-shot films named above (and yes, The Philadelphis Story does not count) but would add The Young Philadelphians (1959), which has a number of scenes shot at Penn Law.

Best things shot in Tampa, where (and in some cases when) I grew up:
    1.  Goodfellas (the zoo scene)
    2. Super Bowl XLIII
    3.  Super Bowl XXV (if you squint really hard, you might see me behind the goalposts that Norwood missed at the end!)
    4.  Ruby in Paradise
    5. In the Line of Duty: The FBI Murders (shot scenes in my neighborhood, and my grandparents met star David Soul at Hyatt Sunday brunch)
    6. Cop and 1/2 (saw director Henry Winkler and his kid playing video games in a theater lobby suring the time they were shooting in town; never saw the movie but I hear it's pretty awful)
    7. The Punisher (Travolta/Jane, not Lundgren)

If you expand to films shot in the greater Tampa Bay area, you also get Edward Scissorhands, My Girl, Cocoon, Summer Rental, Yellowbeard, and The Greatest Show on Earth.

Dumb me - I know realize that you were trying to say these were all filmed in Canada (and not Chicago...or elsewhere).  The perils of being a know it all...

    ReplyDelete
  59. the2scoops3:43 PM

Not just Canada, but all in Toronto and the surrounding area. So many times it subs for Chicago, New York, Boston. Add into this list Undercover Brother, Cinderella Man, the recent RED, X-Men. You could make an ample "Hall of Shame" movie list for us too: Glitter, The Ladies Man, Short Circuit 2...
