MELT YOUR POPSICLE: At this exact moment, the sun is crossing the equator -- thus ending the summer of 2010 and, in turn, balloting for Song of the Summer. Did anyone challenge Ms. Perry for the crown?

Related, Buzzfeed compiles (based on Billboard data) the SotS for every year from 1940-2009.

added, vaguely related: Katy Perry's bosom is deemed too suggestive for Sesame Street.

I agree with Katy Perry for 2010. Right Here Waiting was definitely the song of summer '89 for me, and Livin' la Vida Loca for '99 - that's the summer I started dating the man who is now my husband, and i thought he looked like Ricky Martin (only, fortunately for me, more straight)

  2. Everywhere I turned- including here- people were talking about Cee-Lo this summer.
I can see why it wasn't on the radio, but surely nobody listens to the radio anymore, do they?

I'm going to go with one of Vulture's other suggestions and nominate Cee Lo's obscenely titled, obscenely catchy offering.

Most memorable and catchiest song of the summer goes to Cee-Lo, hands down. It may not have been as ubiquitous and most songs of he summer, but what was this year?

I've heard the "clean" version of that a ton on XPN - "Forget You" is quite catchy.

Haven't heard any of those. But I can recommend the Hyppo for awesome gourmet popsicles.

I agree Katy Perry probably won the crown, but I just downloaded Dynamite by Taio Cruz because I can't get that song out of my head.

Somehow, I have not heard that Katy Perry song, but chalk me up as another Cee-Lo vote.

Apparently, when just coming up from anesthesia after getting all my wisdom teeth removed, I LOVED the Katy Perry song and seat danced and had an argument with myself over whether or not it was Katy Perry or K$sha.  My fiancee likes to remind me of this when we hear this song.

What songs of this summer were upbeat and small-kid appropriate?

My kids (9 and 6) love Dynamite too, prompting a download a few weeks back - best I can tell, it's small-kid-OK, to answer Genevieve's question downthread.

Thanks, Adam!  (Updating to my playlist from last summer for a small-kid-friendly, energetic event - y'all gave me a lot of good suggestions last year, and it's a fun playlist.)

A lot of the music that was hot this year does not strike me as particularly small-kid appropriate.  But one possibility:  Sugarland's Stuck Like Glue---country crossover, with a reggae-flavored bridge.

I think every time I go into my closet I say, "I'm wearin' all my favorite brands brands brands brands" to myself.

The Little Earthling is a big fan of a couple of Katy Perry songs and while I don't really care for them, it's so fun to see the Little Earthling and the Wee Earthling dance themselves silly in the car when the song comes on, I tolerate it.

    Thanks, Jenn.!  country/reggae sounds fun.

  17. California Gurls (at least the radio edit, without Snoop's verse) is probably relatively kid-safe.  The more explicit/nonsensical sexual imagery ("so hot, it'll melt your popsicle") will fly over young kids' heads.

We're going to have young kids through tweens, some of whom get the imagery, so I'm trying to go pretty clean.  But yet fun enough for the older ones.  Threading the needle here.  (Also, I know a bunch of the tweens attending really dislike Katy Perry.)
But I have a lot of good songs from last year (including at least one Arcade Fire - I should probably add one of the songs from their recent videos).

Different standard for what I might play at home / in the car with my kid and other kids, and what I would play at a large, heavily advertised kid-oriented event.

I should find a list of songs played with / associated with this year's World Cup (though that strays away from the post topic of songs of the summer, sorry!).  Those would be very popular with this group.

We've adopted that one at the school where i teach, complete with simple dance. I love it.

And see, I have somehow not heard the Cee-Lo song.

Mmm.  If you're thinking global, that Shakira song would probably count as a song of the summer.

I'd be interested in seeing the final list of songs.  I seem to recall that you posted a list last year.

Thanks, Jenn.!  I had googled the World Cup concert and decided to add the Shakira song ("Waka Waka").
My final list probably will include most of the songs from last year, plus a few new ones, so not that different.  But I'd be happy to email you the final list.
I'm going to check lyrics for "Pyramid" by Charice,

And Billboard had a list of all of the songs of this summer:  http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/search/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1004102457
I'm going to check the Train song "If It's Love," since these kids love "Hey Soul Sister" (which I will also add to the list).
