MI ALMA ES PUERTO RICO: Raise your hand if you were expecting a revival of Paul Simon's musical The Capeman.

  1. Actually, kind of, but in exactly this sort of form--a concert-type thing. I never saw the show, but by pretty much all accounts, there was an incredibly strong score there, coupled with a book of questionable merit. This is the sort of revival I actually wish there were more of rather than straight revivals of the classics. Something that takes a new take on material that was questioned or discarded is much more interesting and challenging. (See, e.g., the Deaf West/Roundabout Big River a few years ago, which I believe I've raved about before.)

Exactly, Matt; it's my Theory of Allowable Remakes. I don't like remakes of bad works (I Spit On Your Grave, really?) or remakes of classics (Psycho being the prime example), but I'm all for remakes of works that were a good idea with questionable execution. Capeman, the movie version of My Fair Lady, the TV show Drive; the sort of thing that could work on a second go round but for whatever reason was flawed in the initial attempt.

But hands off Casablanca, and I'm looking at you Pamala Anderson.

A lot of the music for this show is gorgeous, so I'm very happy about this idea, and hopes to come to DC as well. The actor playing Esmeralda Agron (Natascia Diaz) has a glorious voice.

Actually looking forward to this. Saw the show three times. I never paid! It was a mess, but the music has stuck with me.

My sister saw The Capeman with her AP Spanish class. We got to see a funky production of Bodas de Sangre. We won.

Yes to Drive, but they have to use Nathan Fillion again.

Indeed. And Dylan Baker (and oddly, I found mzself most annoyed by missing out on the conclusion of Melanie Lynskey's story line).
