We were just talking about this at dinner.  The 6 y.o. decided it was the SECOND grossest thing in the world, right after public restrooms.  (The Double Down was #3 on her list.)

Excellent sir. That will be lobster stuffed with tacos.

  3. I have to say, part of what impresses me about this is that it's FRIENDLY'S getting into the extreme sandwich game.   It's like those rare periods when Northwestern gets really good at fooball.

I love me a grilled cheese sandwich but no.  79 grams of fat? Ugh.

I'm on vacay with the w's family. The women were horrified, the men were fascinated, the kids all want one. Guess where we're eating dinner tomorrow?

dip it in batter, fry it up, and call it a Full Monte Cristo.

I saw that on the commercial and thought I was hallucinating.

Is it terrible that I think that looks sort of delicious?  Really just the grilled cheese part, though.  I probably could save myself some clogged arteries by just making a grilled cheese sandwich and calling it a day.

Lord. And what they don't tell you, is that the service at Friendly's is so universally terrible that by the time you get this monstrosity, it'll be cold and congealed, thereby killing the best part of the grilled cheese sammiches- the ooey gooey melted cheese.

Of course, the internet came up with the idea first: http://aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2008/10/the-hamburger-fatty-melt-a-burger-with-two-grilled-cheese-sandwiches-as-its-bun.html

Isn't this really just like big law firms hiring Supreme Court clerks?  No one at the firm expects them to stick around, but by hiring them the firms signal to their competitors and clients that they're awesome?  Do they really sell a lot of these things, or is the idea just to know that Friendly's is a place where you can get a good meal undiluted by health considerations?

In college, the local diner served a popular late-night snack called the "Grillswith" -- two glazed sugar donuts, grilled, with a scoop of ice cream in between. I guess it was just a little ahead of its time.

  15. To be fair, it's only 180 mg of cholesterol.

No offense to Bella Wilfer, but I think that was a like from Spacewoman.  I don't actually eat hamburgers.

    *gag*

No thanks.  You know, I was just at Friendly's last week (a rare occurrence for me, since we don't have 'em out here on the west coast) and was sort of horrified by the lack of healthy breakfast options.  If you want to have an option that doesn't involve a million calories, you need to flip to the back of the menu and make a breakfast from the sides.  At least that way you can order eggs individually instead of by the bucketload.

Umm, I want one.  I have never been tempted to try the Double Down-- at all.  But this sandwich may lure me into a Friendly's, a place I haven't been in say 15-20 years.  I want one.  Yes I do.

Oops, sorry.  My vegetarian, health-considering (I wouldn't say obsessing, but considering, in a good way), cheese-eschewing husband most definitely did not "like" the statement that it looks sort of delicious.  I, however, agree: mmmm.  Not that I'm going to order it, but still.  Maybe followed by a deep fried Twinkie for dessert.

If you're at Friendly's, why are you eating anything that's not a Whattamelon Roll?

Wow, I haven't thought of that in years!

Friendly's, in my childhood, was all about the walk-up ice cream window. A scoop of peppermint stick was pretty much guaranteed to make my day.

I can't tell you how many times I found myself trying to convince them to give me a conehead sundae even though I was over 12.

  27. Wait a minute.  How (and I guess why) does one eschew cheese?  Does not compute.

Sadly, we eventually decided to get pizza instead, though my "Moon Doggie" pizza (pesto, chicken, goat cheese, possibly other things) still likely supplied a significant portion of my RDA of sodium.
