AND HAPPY BRYCEGIVING: Washington D.C. is going to set some kind of local record (at least modern local record; don't know how big the crowds were for the Senators) for number of people to see a baseball game today, for what Dan Steinberg is calling Strasmas. That's shorthand for the major-league birth of the Baby Baseball Jesus, Stephen Strasburg, who throws so hard that his pitches are measured in mach, and who, while still wearing diapers, once struck out Wade Boggs while throwing beach balls from second base. We haven't seen as anticipated a debut as this since Sidd Finch.

Since there probably will be some people at Nationals Park (named for famed temperance advocate Carrie Nationals, much revered in the District) who have never seen a baseball game, here are some etiquette tips from experienced fans around the league (with video): (All via Deadspin, I suppose I should mention.)

  1. We're pretty sure the beer bottle was empty, given how easily the kid was one-handing it.  On the Pujols ball, did that asshole two seats down keep the ball?  It looked that way to me.

By the time they cut back to the kid, you can see that the kid is holding the ball, so the guy clearly gave it to him.  It kind of looks to me that he may actually be with the family.

My older brother was a bit confused last night at the fact that I had not planned to make Extraordinary Efforts to see Strasburg debut.  My primary rooting interest, as y'all know, would be Beloved Braves, but I hope that the kid does well.  Lot of pressure on him.

  4. Okay, Dad clearly has the ball by picture time.  I was faked out for a second by the kid handing the ball back to the guy who caught the rebound.

You have no idea how disappointed I am to be in the SF Bay Area this week instead of home in DC for Strasmas.  I hope to make it to either his third or fourth home start.  And you better believe I will be slowing down the client's internet servers in an attempt to watch online this afternoon!

    Happy Strasmas! I'll be there.

As will I - along the first base line.  I'm going with a random assortment of work colleagues, at least one of which bought tickets to multiple games in this series and the prior series trying to game when the first start would be.  Oddly enough he did not buy tickets to this game originally - we got them as a perk for season ticket holders...

  8. My firm fortuitously chose tonight as its annual summer-associate Nats game event.  I'm out of town (and it would be lost on me anyway), but a large contingent of telecom lawyers will be there for the debut!

Maggie, I bought tix for last Friday thinking that would be the day -- didn't think of also doing today's game.  Cheer for us!  The kiddo will be watching the game on TV and cheering like mad.

FC Chuck pointed me at this take on Strasmas: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/achenblog/2010/06/stephen_strasburg_debuts_for_n.html

  11. As a NY-based Nats fan (grew up in the DC 'burbs) I celebrated Strasmas early by wearing my Nats cap to Sunday's Mets-Marlins game.  Oh, and I'll be watching tonight on MLB network.  Hoping to catch him either on a visit down to my parents or when they're visiting the Mets.

Though I'm not a Nats fan, exactly, as a DC'er who has been to way too many Nats games where the opposition team's fans outnumber the Nats fans, I love the fact that you are a NY-based Nats fan.  Though I knew, in theory, that there must be non-DC based Nats fans, I didn't truly believe that  anyreally existed.   I hope you go to Nats/Mets games in NY and cheer loudly for the Nats.

So, what are the current chances of Strasburg pitching against the Sox next weekend?

My understanding is that Strasburg will be pitching every game the rest of this season, and also batting third through seventh in the lineup.

  15. What happens if Strasburg faces Wieters later this month?  Does this fall into the category of "the senseless waste of pitting these two mighty forces of nature against each other, like matter vs. anti-matter, will be a tragedy, not only for the teams involved but for our planet. All nations must band together, to ensure that such a conflageration never takes place"?

Wieters is so over with.  Strasburg faces Heyward later this month, probably June 30 but maybe June 28 or 29 if the Nats skip anybody in their rotation because of off days.

2 runs, 4 hits and 11 Ks through 6 isn't such a bad first start.

Nor is averaging something like 97-98 with the fastball, topping out at 100, and throwing four pitches that, as Jeff Sullivan says, belong in a museum.

  19. Final line: 7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 14 K.  Those last three Ks were sick.

I hadn't had a chance to watch until the seventh inning, and now I am both (a) angry I didn't go to the game, and (b) nearly speechless.   Barring injuries and assorted issues and setbacks, I, for the first time, consider myself very lucky to live in DC in the summer.

I am so going to be able to drag the boyfriend to another Nats game this year.

  23. 100% -- he'll pitch Friday if he pitches every fifth day, Saturday if he pitches every fifth game.

  24. I had spectacular seats in Section 122, a few rows behind and a dozen seats to the left of James Carville.  A really remarkable performance, and Strasburg could have easily have beaten J.R. Richard's record for strikeouts in the first start if not for the pitch count issue.

  25. This, of course, marks the first and only time that Ted is "to the left of James Carville."

  26. Depends: where does Carville stand on fraternity desegregation?

Seriously.  There was a curve for a strike in there that was just nuts.

I have tickets for Friday's game - so I'm definitely hoping it's every fifth day.

Even the vociferous O's fans at the Red Sox/O's game we went to were so over Wieters.

The baseball-obsessed kiddo is so very happy.
I am now scoping out future dates trying to figure out which ones are likely to be Strasburg home games, so I can bring the kiddo.  He will be thrilled out of his gourd.

LOL -- I have tickets to Saturday's game.  But if it's Friday, I'll probably swing a way to get there.

So Strasburg in his first three starts plays three mediocre teams (including the Indians).  Good way to ease him in.
