WATCH OUT, MICHAEL PHELPS: Leading Team USA to a gold medal in gymnastics certainly can get you a lot of doors, but it doesn't guarantee you top position in the NYT wedding announcements, as Kerri Strug learned today. Her announcement was #2, behind this couple.

Congrats to Kerri Strugg!  Hope they have a long, happy life together.

As for the first story, that woman sounds insufferable and that article would have you believe her struggle to get to the altar was more challenging than Kerri Strugg's gold medal.  Interesting that both of them reached their goal on an injured ankle but the similarity would appear to end there.

Amen, Meghan.  Nothing about the first woman strikes me as attractive.

'no thumping sound like peg-legged pirates in movies'  AWESOME!!!!  Why do you have the feeling that the universe seems to be handing her a comeuppance.

I read the first part of the first announcement out loud to my husband.  He said, "Is that from 'The Onion'?"

That first one sounds like the plot to an insufferable romantic comedy...

  7. What?  None of you discussed 18th-century Chinese porcelain on dates with your significant other?  Savages.

Strugg used to date a guy from my fraternity (although he graduated before I got there).  All I can remember about her was when he'd come back for reunions, she'd briefly walk in, then wait in the car.

I think my favorite phrase from the first article was "At one of her first engagement parties..."

Man, wedding announcements in the NYTimes are much more elaborate than the ones from here.

The mother of the bride from the Vows column (who likes having a butler more than a computer) was arrested last year for hitting a 13 year old boy while driving and fleeing the scene. She claimed she thought she hit a deer.

  12. Congrats to Kerri Strug, but was that really the best photo they could find? Yeesh.

Were we supposed to feel some sort of sympathy for the bride in the first announcement? Because umm, no.

The sleeper of this story is Matt reading the NYT wedding section like he was Charlotte from SATC.

C'mon - she brought her own gun. You gotta love that.

Yes, I found her as insufferable as the rest of you. That said, the only person who has to like her is her new husband.

  16. I skim.  I don't read every one, but sometimes, you notice something of interest.
