FOLLOW THE DAY, AND REACH FOR THE SUN: Idol results, and a callback to the initial tiers, after the fold.

Andrew Garcia and Katie Stevens go home, with Tim Urban also under threat.

Neither of them were going to win, and Garcia clearly had emptied his tank before the semis were over. As for Katie, I overestimated her abilities and, clearly, underestimated yet again the ability of tween girls and their parents to power-dial on behalf of untalented asexual white boys. (Year of the Woman? Apparently not.)

That said, the margin of error has declined dramatically for our singers, and if Tim and Aaron remain as safe as they've been, the next few weeks are going to suck.

Next week it's "inspirational songs," with guest mentor Alicia Keys. Translation: sing whatever you want.

  1. Ack.  I generally hate inspirational songs week.  Ugh.  I recall precisely one memorable (in a good way) song from two previous inspirational songs week:  CtCM channelling the Iz version of Over the Rainbow.

  2. Oh, and I would have dropped Aaron instead of Katie, but either way, Andrew + one of those two were the right choice this week.

And they may have bought Big Mike some additional pity points by toying with him like they did.

  3. At this point, Tim or Aaaron need to go for the next two weeks or someone more deserving will be leaving too soon.  Is that why the tier thoery exists? To make the middle portion of the season tolerable?

Ryan never said that Big Mike, Tim and Katie were the bottom three. In fact, he very pointedly mentioned at the end that one person was going home, and one person was NOT in the bottom three. So it's ambiguous whether Tim was on the bottom or not. And clearly they kept Big Mike there just to heighten the drama.

Either way, I thought Tim's performance was his best so far, so if there's one week where it's not a complete travesty that he's safe it would be this week.

I am more and more convinced each week that either Tim or Aaron (or, God forbid, both) are going to make the final four.

  5. At this point, we start looking at Who's Never Been In The Bottom Three -- and that's Crystal, Siobhan, Casey and Lee.  They remain your most likely final four.

We also need to look at Theory #2 of mine, and that's where Tim poses a threat.  If he continues to "grow" ...

I wish one of the contestants was adventureous enough to pick something outside of the usual "inspirational" song oevre.  Maybe Siobhan or Crystal will take a chance with a non-traditional song that inspired them musically.  Since I know that's a pipe dream, I'd like someone to take it super-literal and sing Chicago's "You're the Inspiration".

  7. I took a gander at the Inspirational Songs list that is at MJs Big Blog, and yup.  Pretty standard stuff.  Fair amount of pop-rock, though, so maybe it won't be utterly schlocky, like it was in Season 6.

I thought Katie's farewell performance was recordable.  I don't know which of the others should have gone last night (sure It wasn't big mike, siobahn or Chrystal), but I'm pretty sure it wasn't Katie.  I do agree she couldn't possibly win though.  That neck thing scared me.  Maybe that's what 16 year old girls think is sexy....

  10. Is it possible Tim was in the bottom three but the producers don't want to tip off his fan base that he could be in danger, thus motivating them to vote for him in even higher numbers?  Or maybe I'm just grasping at straws.

I'd love to know how Casey, Lee and Crystal are doing in the vote totals. I'd love for them to be the final three. It's making me a bit nervous that Tim is still around.

Katie has a great voice but I think she's just too young. Maybe we'll see her on X-Factor in a few years. Ryan seems to be even nicer/more comforting to some of the rejected contestants this season. Or maybe he's always this nice and I just never noticed?

  11. I think that Tim was in the bottom three.  I think that the bottom three was Andrew, Katie, and Tim, and that Mike was substantially higher.
