THAT'S ADVERTAINMENT: Look, we've made more than enough fun of NBC over the past few weeks, but I want to note something that they're doing that's smart and workable, and that's some of the semi-integrated ads they've been running in recent weeks--I've only noticed them on Chuck, where there's been a serialized set of Honda ads chronicling Ellie, Awesome, and Morgan's journey to Vancouver for the Olympics, and on Community, which has Ken Jeong and Jim Rash shilling for TurboTax. The ads are smartly written enough that, even though I timeshift, I won't start fastforwarding till they're over, and that's credit. Not sure if it makes me more likely to buy a Honda or use TurboTax (I'm not likely to be buying a car in the immediate future, and I already use TurboTax), but it's at least a step in the right direction for advertisers.

don't go gving dap to turbotax just yet-- they're also doing integrated spots with Bridget from Real Housewives where she pretends to do her taxes while tanning

This only works in situations where the show is obviously not in the plane of reality or alternate reality. I can't imagine Coach Taylor telling me how good Applebee's is or Caprica 6 telling me to buy a frakkin' toaster from Sears. <span> </span>
ReplyDeleteBut, Mook, what I like about the spots is that the characters aren't talking to the camera and telling you to buy. They seem more like product placement scenes. I think a commercial showing the Taylors having a nice family dinner at Applebees might actually work, if done well.
ReplyDeleteBut really, the Chuck spots work because they're pretty amusing in their own right. Morgan + Awesome/Ellie road tripping is inherently funny, and the scripts for the ads have been good. I actually watch them.

ReplyDeleteIs it mildly interesting to compare that the Chuck ads for Honda have the actors in character, while the Community ads for Turbo Tax have Jeong and Rash playing themselves?
